- Details of Event
- Deceased was cleaning a place on the floor to set up a sprag to seine overhanging coal on the side of a gateroad in the Thick Coal, which sprag the doggie had told him to set half an hour previously, when a piece of the coal fell upon his back as he stooped and fractured his spine, death resulting five days later. He had tried to pull the coal down with his pick a few minutes before, but having failed, he sat directly under the coal to prepare for a sprag. After he had tried to pull it down a shot was fired in the next stall which probably loosened the coal which afterwards fell upon him. The accident might have been prevented by more strict attention to instructions, and by the exercise of a little care by the deceased.
