- Details of Event
- 20 December 1936: An element of mystery surrounds the death of a Bellshill miner named Alexander Gordon, 453 Old Edinburgh Road, whose body was found in the workings of Woodyett Pit, of the Herbertshire Colliery, Denny, where he was employed as a fireman. Gordon failed to report at his customary station at the change of shift, and on a search being made, he was found lying dead near the coal face. The only mark on the body was a cut in the region of the right eye. It is expected that a post-mortem examination will be made to ascertain the cause of death. Gordon was about 60 years of age. Following the discovery of the body, the colliery was idle yesterday. [Scotsman 22 December 1936]
