- Details of Event
- About a fortnight before the accident a heavy blast had dislodged a quantity of granite on to the floor of the quarry the greater part of which had been removed. One of the larger stones left had been split by a shot about 26 hours before the accident into three pieces, and while deceased was drilling a hand hole in one of these, another weighing about six tons rolled over, and pinned him against the block he was working on. The block that rolled over rested on a narrow base about 7 feet long on loose debris and was top heavy: it appeared to be resting against the quarry face. Water running down the quarry may have loosened the debris on which it rested and disturbed its equilibrium. A machine drill working 7 or 8 yards off may have prevented deceased hearing the preliminary movement of the stone.
