- Details of Event
- This accident happened at 4.30 am. A stoker went into the fan engine-house and heard deceased, whose duty it was to attend to the fan engine, call out for help. He was lying in the crank race with his head towards the outside of the bed-plate and his legs beneath the moving connecting rod and said he had slipped off the bed-plate and thus been caught. His oil can was lying near him, and he apparently been either going to or coming from the fly-wheel shaft bearing. He died in the engine house. There are two engines for this fan but they are worked alternately and they are well fenced. The way to the shaft bearing is beneath whichever connecting rod which happens to be hung up, but he must have been getting over the moving connecting rod when he slipped and was caught. It was neither convenient nor would he save time by doing so.
