He was engaged cutting back the clay underneath a gantry, over which the empty and full wagons passed in order to make room for setting a prop beneath the end of one of the sleepers supporting the wagon way, when a piece of clay fell from the upper part of the face on to his back as he was stooping in the- act of shovelling clay. He had apparently undermined the top clay and it had fallen unexpectedly.
