- Details of Event
- A fire occurred in the hauling engine house at the top of No.2 Great Vein Incline, on the main intake airway to that district, through the ignition by means of a candle of the waste from the cotton driving ropes. Gainard failed to make his escape up the incline which is steep, and was suffocated by the fumes from the fire. William Barrett, overman at the colliery told the inquest that "further along they came across poor Gainard who was dead; his body was quite cold; clutched tightly in his hand was a rope. His lamp was burning and there was some tea in his bottle. If he could have crawled fifty yards he might have been saved. The miners about this spot used naked lights". Death was due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
