- Coal pillars on the sides of the North-west Bord were being taken out. To do this the colliers break in at the centre of the pillar and carry 4 yard herd pieces right and left. Garbutt was working at this when a stone weighing about two tons fell from a parting in the roof on to him. He died on the 4th October.
