- Details of Event
- A fireman discovered a small fall of dirt (about 2 loads) which had pushed out a leg under a bar in a shunt where the roadway was 12 feet wide and 9 feet high the road being timbered throughout with bars and legs at intervals of 4 feet and well covered in with slabs on both top and sides. He took these two men to the spot and instructed them to load the dirt. He examined the timbering all round and found no indications of further danger. He had left the spot and gone but a few yards along the level when he heard a fall and turned back. He found a large quantity of roof (about 30 tons) on the floor and the men buried beneath it. The fall had also reeled out the two settings of timber next the setting previously discharged. The roof consisted of clay shale intersected by numerous joints and full of nodules up to 12 inches in diameter. 2 killed.
