- Details of Event
- Died April 17. Deceased and anther stoneman (who was leading man) were shooting down top stone and building packs in a gateway in longwall workings in the Engine or Beaumont seam in a section of workings where coal is mined by a coal cutter worked by compressed air. They had fired a shot in the post stone overlying the coal and also a shot to break up a loose stone and were busy with the packs when deceased while casting a stone displaced a prop and liberated a stone 2 feet by 2 feet and 6 inches tick freed at the sides by jacks and keen parting above which struck and so injured his spine that his legs were paralysed. The chargemen been in the place twice during shift. It appeared that the coal cutter was working near the place of accident and it was suggested that noise from it might prevent persons working hearing the sounds that sometimes preceded a fall of stone.
