- Details of Event
- Deceased received internal injuries, by being struck in the region of the waist by a clip which flew from an endless rope. Loads were being drawn up an incline 85 yards in length by means of a rope, attached to the endless rope when required by an ordinary bulldog clip. It was deceased's duty to walk along the level in order to detach the clip at the stopping place. On this occasion the loads on the incline left the rails when they were about 10 yards from the top. Deceased, at the other end of the bye-rope, appeared not to have noticed this, and allowed the rope to continue in motion until the loads were drawn fast up against the landing sill when the cap by which the chain on the clip was attached to the rope was drawn by the extra strain. The sudden release caused the clip to fly off the rope and it struck deceased as described, causing injuries to which he succumbed on the following day.
