At shaft bottom; while he was assisting the hitcher to discharge three pieces of pitwood, each 9ft. in length, from the cage at the pit bottom, a piece of timber 6.5ft. long fell from the surface, and killed him. The banksman at the surface was preparing to send down 6.5 in. timber upon a tram in the cage, but he was not able to explain why one piece fell down the shaft.
