- Details of Event
- Deceased and another were driving a gate road 5 to 6ft. wide through a reserved pillar in the Thick coal, which is here about 9 yds in thickness. The gate road was stripping a large downthrow fault, and was in very faulty ground. They descended the shaft at 4pm. on the previous day and intended to work until the fireman came in the morning. The coal was ‘very thingy’ that is, full of slips. Early in the morning a fall of coal took place. The coal at face was ‘a bit heavy, but did not seem to be broken’. Two sprags or holing props had already been set, and they decided to set a third. When they were driving it up, a piece of coal 4ft. 9ins. by 3ft. by 2ft. 6ins. tapering to a knife edge came down, reeling out the sprags and killing deceased instantly. His mate was injured, but got out in the dark, and was found by the fireman at 6am about 300 yds from pit bottom.
