- Fall of roof and side (coal and old gob) in Thick Coal pickings. These man were working in a heading about 5ft.wide and 6ft. high driven through large blocks of fallen coal and old goaf and supported by timber settings about 3ft. apart. They were getting some of the broken coal behind the legs on one side of road near the back when the timber was displaced by a rush of broken coal and fine 'shutt’ or gob stuff. The men were not killed at once. and were spoken to several times by the rescuers, who had great difficulty in reaching them, owing to renewed falls of shutt it took 12 hours to recover the bodies. Death appeared to have been caused by suffocation by being buried in the fine shutt. 2 killed.
