- Details of Event
- The deceased, with two other men, were fixing a liner bar on its legs in a dip in the Ten Feet (inclination 1 in 1.5). The dip had previously been systematically timbered with settings 2 feet 6 inches apart and well covered over with poles and slabs. The end of the bar to which the deceased were attending had been placed in position. A piece of dirt projecting from the timbers prevented the other end from rising high enough. One of the men then tried to remove the obstruction by striking it with his axe. He broke part of it away and was reaching for a pick to remove the remainder when a goth occurred. Two bars higher up the dip were reeled out. The dirt from above them slipped down and trapped Fowler and Clewlow. The latter was not completely buried at first, but before relief could be obtained a second heavy fall came and killed him. It is probable that Fowler was killed instantly by the first fall. 2 killed.
