Deceased was in charge of, and was operating an electrically driven coal-cutting machine. The machine was about to be taken empty down the coal face. The current was switched on and Baines received a fatal shock. The system of supply was 650 volts. A.C., 3 phase. The coal cutter was earthed to the surface, the earth line being partly through an old haulage rope. The earth-line resistance was evidently too high, and probably the fault lay in the haulage rope being too small.
