- Details of Event
- Deceased was driving a heading in the shales overlying the Froghall Hematite. The roof and sides were supported by laggings driven close together behind settings of timber 3ft. 6ins. high and of the same width. In ridding stone back from the face to the loader a lump struck the leg of a bar knocking it out. A fall occurred reeling two other bars and burying Fletcher. The fall caused an inrush of blackdamp from some old works and rendered the rescue operations somewhat difficult. It took about six hours to release Fletcher who suffered apparently from shock and the effects of the bad atmosphere to such an extent that he died six days later.
