- 19 September 1919: Boy Killed in a West Calder Pit - Yesterday morning a boy named William Fleming, son of Mr Fleming, Mossend, West Calder, was killed in Breich Shale Pit. He had fallen between a rake of full hutches in motion, and they passed over his body. The lad had just left school and started work in the pit this week. [Scotsman 20 September 1919]
