- Details of Event
- Deceased was working at the coal face a few feet to the left of the road head in a longwall working in the Little Main Band, which is 1 foot 10 inches thick when a mass of rattler (a bituminous shale) and stone measuring 6 feet by 3 feet and 9 inches thick at extremes fell from the roof upon him and he was instantly killed. The fall came away at one end from a small hitch of 6 inches throw and was relieved next the coal face by a bat slip and at the other side by an ordinary cleat in the rattler. No timber was set under the stone which showed unwisdom on the part of the deceased considering the proximity of the hitch. The deputy had examined he place before deceased started and before all the coal had been removed below the stone and the place then seemed safe. There was a good supply of loose props.
