- Details of Event
- Finney was engaged in taking down 3ft. 6ins. of ripping in a road in the Holly Lane seam. A length of 15ft., loose at both ends, remained supported on two bars. Two shot-holes were bored at one end and charged by the fireman. While the fireman was away warning seine men working near of the shots to be fired, Finney took his axe and commenced to knock out one of the bars. A piece of the ripping 1ft. 6ins. thick fell from an area of 6ft. by 5ft. and buried him. There was no actual necessity for removing the bars at all, and it was extremely rash to set about doing so in this manner.
