He was engaged with two others in cleaning out a drain pipe for a column of exhaust pipe in the pumping shaft when he was fatally scalded by a rush of steam. The pumps were standing at the time, but it was probable that one of the valves was a little open and allowed sufficient steam to get slowly into the cylinder to cause the pump to make a stroke.
