- Details of Event
- Deceased descended the shaft to the lower bottom and put shoes on some horses and afterwards he and a roadsman came to the midworking 53 fathoms above and also shod horses there. After an interval they came back to the shaft to be raised. The usual signal was given and the roadsman stepped on to the cage and deceased followed and shut the gate behind. When on the cage the roadsman asked if the gate was shut to which deceased replied Almost and the cage was raised the roadsman beard a slight noise and on turning round saw deceased disappear down the shaft. From the marks it was evident that deceased was caught at the door heads and carried up a distance of 10 ft. and there forced over a bunten at end of the shaft. It is probable deceased had put his head outside the cage to see if the gate was properly shut when he was caught.
