- Details of Event
- Died June 8. deceased was working in a longwall place in the Potash seam which is made up of 9 inches of top coal 2 feet 8 inches of black stone band, 1 foot of coal. 3 inches of black metal, and 3 inches of coal. About 10 yards to the right of the gate road the face was worked forward about a foot for a length of 9 or 10 feet in the 1 foot of coal. The thick band and top coal overhung a few inches, and the overhanging part of the band fell away from a slip for a length of about 6 feet and pinned deceased against the pack wall behind, which was within 3 feet of the face. The weight of the band that fell was estimated at about one ton. He was soon released and was not thought to be seriously injured, but he died three days after. A 4-foot prop was near which he may have used as a stay, but as he was supposed to be taking down the band he may have drawn it. There was other loose timber lying near. The deputy examined the place before work started, when he thought it safe.
