- Details of Event
- Deceased and his mate were breaking a hole through the shaft walling at a depth of 500 yards, and were standing on a hinged leaf attached to the door of the cage. While so engaged Farnworth was struck on the head by a small piece of brick which must have fallen from some considerable distance up the shaft. His mate pulled him into the cage, but he immediately expired, probably a strong shaftman's hat would have prevented a fatal injury. Both men had spent some time in examining the shaft before commencing work.
