Fairclough, when knocking out with a hammer a prop said to have been in front of the centre of tub road at face, got killed by a stone falling upon him from the roof. Fairclough was not authorised to draw props and exceeded his duties in doing so. There was a gablock and chain only 50 yards distant at the time.
