- Details of Event
- The accident happened at the working face in the Big Flint seam. Deceased was preparing to set a prop and bar at the required distance to support the roof, when an oval shaped stone 4 feet by 3 feet by 6 inches thick in the middle tapering to a sharp edge at the circumference, fell upon him causing a fracture of the spine from which he died in hospital on January 17th. The deceased bad examined the roof with him three minutes prior to the accident, and it appeared to be quite good and safe. The Under Manager bad examined the roof of the place shout an hour previously and considered it to be safe. The stone fell without previous warning. An examination of the cavity revealed the presence of a smooth glassy surface surrounding it which could not have been detected before hand.
