The coal for the coke ovens, after being crushed is elevated by means of a chain and bucket elevator to a hopper from which it is tilled into coke oven tubs and then taken to the ovens. The elevator was erected in October, 1907, and is placed at an angle of about 70 degrees from the horizontal and the distance from the centre of the top drum to that of the bottom drum is 75 feet. The buckets are attached to two link chains 20 inches apart centre to centre. Considerable trouble had been experienced from the commencement with the chains owing to the links breaking. On the day prior to the accident the chains broke and they and the buckets were precipitated in into the hole into which the coal is delivered by the crusher in the crusher house. At the time of the accident they had been got into position by means of blocks and coupled together. The blocks, although not detached, were eased and the weight taken off them. The bottom portion of the chains and buckets were secured by a chain fastened to an iron bar across the casing, in which the buckets travel, and new pins were being put into the links. The coke oven manager was about half way up on a bucket and the deceased was standing on a bucket about level with the floor of the crusher house putting pins in when the two links, within six feet of the top, broke, and the and the chains and buckets fell to the bottom and the deceased was carried with them and killed. The coke oven manager was carried through the opening in the wall of the crusher house but, owing to the buckets jamming at the opening, he was saved from instant death. The accident was caused by the defective quality of the links forming the chain and the presence of fractures and flaws in them.
