He was helping to raise a load of half a ton by means of policy blocks attached to a 40-foot scaffolding pole, used as a derrick pole. The pulley blocks were attached at a point 10 feet from the top where the section was 4 inches diameter. The pole broke and fell, killing Beckett almost instantly.
