- Whilst he was examining a rise drift, ventilated by a wood pipe 11 in. by 9 in. with a naked light, he ignited an accumulation of gas and was severely burnt about the head and arms. He walked to within a few yards of a workman 700 yards inbye, gave him certain instructions, and then walked out of the mine to the Under-Manager's house before having his injuries dressed. He died in Barnsley Hospital on 5th July, 1914.
