- Details of Event
- The accident occurred at the entrance to a heading or tunnel driven into the chalk some 50 or 60 yards. Only a short length of face was being worked on each side of the beading, the chalk being run down into wagons placed in the heading below. Four empty wagons were being pushed by a locomotive into the heading, and it was intended to leave three there to be filled. When the locomotive was passing into the heading the driver (deceased's father) heard a shout, and on looking found deceased fastened between the side of the engine and the chalk wall. At this point there was only a clearance of three inches between the chalk and the step upon which apparently deceased had been riding into the tunnel. At the other side, where the coupling was usually done, there was a greater clearance. Deceased was found to be very severely crushed, and was taken to the Tilbury Hospital, where he died the same day.
