- Details of Event
- Died October 3rd. Part of deceased’s duty was to take the loaded bogie of ore from the shaft top along a gangway to a hopper from which the ore was put into a washer. The gangway was 25 feet above the ground and fenced except for a part immediately over the hopper where it was intended to erect a shelter. While emptying the bogie of ore into the hopper deceased slipped and fell to the ground breaking his leg. He never resumed work. He was in Ulverston Hospital some time and was then removed to the Workhouse where he exhibited signs of mental derangement and in consequence he was sent to the Lancaster Lunatic Asylum where he died. An inquest was held the medical officer of the Asylum certifying death was due to "acute melancholia, refusal of food and abscess," but in answer to an inquiry from me he wrote. ‘I have no doubt that this man's death was the result of his accident.’
