- Deceased was passing underneath the edge of the coal ripping in a gate, when a piece of coal weighing about 500lbs. was burst off the dipping face by a "bump." Both his thighs and his spine were fractured. The coal was being worked on "face" and there was a curl slip from which the coal fell. The edge of the ripping over hung the supports 1 foot 6 inches. No timber was displaced by the fall and the specified distance for setting props was not exceeded. The place was examined and reported safe three hours before the accident.
