- Details of Event
- Elks was killed by a fall of coal from the upper part of the face in a longwall drift in the Cockshead. A portion of the face 3 or 4 yards in length was overhanging, and there were no sprags or other supports to it. Elks stood about 1 yard from the next sprag, and attempted to bar down the further portion of the overhanging coal. The whole length fell at once, and he was knocked against a post and killed. A sprag ought to have been set before proceeding to get down the coal, and such sprag would in all probability have prevented the accident.
