As he was getting out of the cage at a landing 45 yards above the pit bottom, the cage was accidentally lowered, and he fell to the pit bottom. There were some men waiting at the landing to go to the surface, and as deceased and his comrades were getting out of the cage, one of the men waiting gave some signal to the surface-intending to give five knocks. The banksman says he only received one knock, and signalled to the engine man to lower the cage. There was no hitcher placed at this landing.
