- He had to drop his full tubs down a jig, the gradient of the seam being 21 inches per yard. There were three levels above the main level, and from flatsheets at each, single tubs were jigged to the level below. The putter on the second level above the main level ran his jig, detached the chain from the tub, and had just got clear of the flatsheets when a heavy fall of stone took place. Some large stones rolled down the incline. The putter (deceased) at the first level had attached the chain to the full tub he had just received, and, after taking off the chock, was waiting to get the signal from the bottom that the empty tub was coupled on. The stones from above appear to have struck the tub and sent it down the incline with the deceased behind it. He died next day in the Lady Eden Hospital, Bishop Auckland. The incline was very well timbered. Probably the first cause of the accident was that the full tub knocked out the end prop of a crossing balk when being twisted on the flatsheets at the second level.
