- With others he was engaged in renewing rail guides in a shaft The rails were in 18 feet lengths and the shaft buntons were 6 feet rails were held in position by chairs bolted to the buntons. In this case the top chair where the joint was had been taken off, then the next two chairs A pair of blocks suspended from a bunton had been attached to the rail ready to lift it out of the bottom chair As soon as the blocks were moved, the top 6 feet of the rail fell away, struck Edmundson on the head and knocked him off the cage there had been a joint at that point unnoticed by anybody. He fell a distance of 100 feet and his spine was fractured, He died in Sunderland Infirmary the same day.
