- Details of Event
- The Main Coal seam 2 feet 5 inches thick was being worked longwall below the Hutton seam goaf 24 feet above. The gateway in which deceased worked had been brushed in the roof stone close to the coal and packs built on each side and deceased was hewing the left-hand pack and the face when a stone about 3.5 feet square and 1 ft thick next the pack tailing out to the face fell on him. The stone was relieved by jacks on three side a false bed above. There was no timber set under the stone but there was an ample supply close at hand. The deputy had examined the place about two hours before the accident. The Local Inspectors reported ‘it was a pure accident and no one to blame.’
