Whilst leaning over a fence to grease the teeth of some cog wheels, he overbalanced and fell amongst them. It was no part of his duty to grease the wheels and he had been forbidden to do so. The fence was 3 feet 7.5 inches high but he stood upon an irregularly shaped log of wood 12 inches thick.
