- 24 October 1921: Fatal Pit Fall - A Newarthill miner named Andrew Duthert, 55 years of age, and residing at Church Street there, has died as the result heavy fall from the roof of the Virtuewell seam at Holytown Colliery on Monday night. The unfortunate man was following his employment at the time when, without warning, a heavy stone gave way dislocating his neck. Death must have been instantaneous. Deceased leaves a widow and family to whom much sympathy is extended in their time of bereavement. [Motherwell Times 28 October 1921]
