He was in charge of the pit bottom whilst a rope guide was being lowered. After the cage had been rung off, hut temporarily stopped in the shaft by the surface man, he put his head over the edge of the bottom landing to watch a man working in the sump. The cage noiselessly descended and crushed his skull.
