He was standing on a long lever trying to lift up a bed of stone, under which he had placed a short bar with its chisel-pointed end sticking out parallel to the long lever, when the lever swerved and he fell to the ground and his thigh punctured by the chisel-pointed end of the short bar. He died in hospital 16 days afterwards from lockjaw.
