- Details of Event
- When working behind a full truck casting gravel made by a stone- crusher from one side of a line of rails to the other, a partially-filled truck, standing on the same line of rails some 20 yards away, was about to be moved further underneath stone spout to allow its rear end to be filled. There was an empty truck, with its brake said to be tight on, standing between deceased and the truck about to be moved. The man attending to the latter released the brake and put the end of the brake lever in its rest and the truck moved forward. When this man wished to put the brake on again to stop the truck he could not release the lever. He shouted, and another man came to his aid, but he also failed, and truck ran on and bumped into the empty truck, which shot forward and struck the truck behind when deceased had been working. Deceased was caught between he buffers of the two last mentioned trucks, when apparently attempting to cross the line of rails, and killed. The construction of the brake lever rest on the truck was faulty, inasmuch as when the brake lever was in a certain position in the rest it could not he raised vertically through the spring showing to the projection of a bolt.
