- 10 September 1940: Shotts Pit Explosion - One man was killed and another was seriously injured when an explosion occurred in the Stane Pit, belonging to the Shotts Iron Company, Ltd., last night. The men, James Hughes, 51 Newarthill Road, Carfin, and Patrick Downs, 16 Hill Terrace, Carfin, who were employed as brushers, were seriously hurt when a shot exploded. They were taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where Hughes died shortly after admission. The condition of Downs is regarded as critical. [Scotsman 11 September 1940]
