Hole had been bored 18ft in sandstone. It had been shaken four times that afternoon and in an hour after the last shaking charge had been fired deceased ran 50lb gunpowder into the hole and was pouring another 50lb when an explosion occurred and injured him so severely that he died the next day. Smouldering fuse must have lodged on a ledge in the hole some distance up from the bottom.
