- When engaged as a lasher-on in a brow dipping one in eight, a lashing chain attaching two full tubs of dirt to the endless rope, broke, and the tubs running back down-brow, broke the lashing chain of the two following tubs, with the result that Downham got killed by the tubs before he could enter the level, near which he was occupied.
