He was engaged, along with other workers, securing the roof in a main haulage road where a fall had displaced an iron girder. After centre props and other supports had been set, another fall occurred bringing down another girder and partly burying three men, of whom Downes was one. Two of them were extricated, but it took so long to liberate Downes who was pinned to the ground by a girder, that a third and much larger fall took place from the road sides and roof before he was got out, and killed him on the spot. Downes had been fast about fifty minutes when the final fall of ground killed him.
