- Details of Event
- The colliers in the previous shift had holed the coal in the working face up to a slip for a length of five yards and drawn the sprags and the coal in fall displaced some props. Although there was another slip parallel to 5 feet back from the one at the face nothing was done beyond setting a short prop at the far end of the fall of coal, to support the roof between the two slips. The deceased followed in and took no precautions and the consequence was that a large fall occurred and killed him. The deputy visited the place two hours before the accident occurred and made a mark, with chalk, on the roof where a prop was to be set on top of the fallen coal he should, however, considering the dangerous nature of the roof owing to the position of the slips, have stopped and seen that sufficient timber was set.
