Deceased was working at a small top canch on a main rolleyway, which he had brought forward some 700 yards. Balks 11 feet long and 3 feet apart were used. He was engaged with the chargeman taking out the balk supported by two end props, just underneath the canch. One end prop had been removed, and in knocking the other prop out with a mall a large stone from the edge of the canch fell on to him and killed him instantly. A "pout" and a "Sylvester were provided, and had one of these been used the prop could have been withdrawn in perfect safety.
