He was riding out in the workmen's set as usual when some tubs got off the way and a prop was drawn out, causing a large stone which had been lying on a balk supported by the prop to fall on him. He was so injured that he died the following morning. The set was a short one consisting of 12 tubs, and it got off the way at a curve. The gradient was in favour of the load, and probably the set over-ran the main rope.
