- Details of Event
- A shot had been fired at the deep side of a breasting in the Pennystone Ironstone. Sprags were drawn over a length of 6yds. of face. The stone came down in the immediate neighbourhood of the shot only. The remainder was slightly drawn from the roof and was apparently supported on a few lumps which lodged under the holing when the shot exploded. Deceased and a fireman together examined the roof and sides and considered them safe. After two tubs had been loaded at the top end of the dressing, deceased went down the breasting to try to move some of the stone that lay in the holding. As soon as he did so the whole dressing came down and reeled out two props and then a thin shell of bass 9ins. thick fell over an area of 6yds. by 2yds. killing deceased who had no chance of escape as, before the dressing fell, there was only a space of 4ft. between the pack and the face.
