- Scalded by hot water whilst in a boiler underground, cleaning it, the blow off pipe being open to pipe connected with an adjoining boiler. The attendant on this latter boiler consulted the firms boiler inspector who together with the insurance company's inspector were stood in front of the fatal boiler, then opened the tap to blow off his boiler, having 25lbs. steam pressure therein, directly the steam and hot water rushed into the boiler deceased was within, he crawled through the mud door fearfully scalded. Died 23rd. A proper retaining valve would have prevented this, or a single hex key which could not be withdrawn until the blow-off tap was closed.
